Can credit card companies call my family members?

I owe money to a credit card. Last 2 months I’ve paid less then the required monthly limit – I told them I am having money issues -they have called 3 family members. I called them and asked them not to do that and I thought it was illegal..they said we gave no information out regarding your account we were just looking for you and gave them a number to call – they said they were allowed to do that.

Yes, that is completely legal. They can also legally call your place of work, your neighbors, your dentist, etc., if they happen to "find" those phone numbers. Find the cash to pay them off, it will only get worse than where you are now if you do not!

If you do not respond to their enquiries they are allowed to search for you, within reason. If, however, you have maintained contact then they may be in breach of their own code of conduct or the law depending where you are and if the relatives live at your home address. Keep a record of all such calls. If they persist you may be able to complain on harassment grounds.

They are allowed call you at any telephone number, including that of a family member, for the purpose of trying to talk to you. However, they are not allowed to tell the family member that they are a debt collector or that they are calling because you owe money.
